SS 304 and SS 316 are the two most-specified austenitic stainless steels in the world — and buyers constantly ask which one they need. They look identical, but one small difference in chemistry changes where each can safely be used and what it costs. This guide breaks down 304 vs 316 on composition, corrosion resistance, price, and application, so you order the right grade the first time.

The difference is molybdenum. SS 316 has 2–3% molybdenum; SS 304 has none. That molybdenum gives 316 much stronger resistance to chlorides (salt, seawater, de-icing salt) and many acids — so 316 is the marine / chemical / coastal grade. SS 304 is the cost-effective all-rounder for indoor and mild outdoor use, and it is the most-used stainless grade globally.

When to Choose SS 304
Choose 304 when there is no significant chloride or acid exposure: kitchen equipment and utensils, sinks, cutlery, architectural cladding, food processing (non-salt), furniture, and general fabrication. It delivers the same clean finish and strength as 316 at a lower price — over-specifying 316 here just adds cost.
When to Choose SS 316
Choose 316 when chlorides or aggressive chemicals are present: coastal and marine structures, boat fittings, swimming pools, desalination, chemical and pharmaceutical equipment, and medical/surgical applications. The molybdenum prevents pitting and crevice corrosion that would attack 304 in these conditions.
The One Rule That Saves Money
Match the grade to the environment — don't over- or under-spec. Under-spec (304 in a coastal plant) and you get premature corrosion failure.
